  • Invest in the right product with confidence. Before development begins, understand what customers really need, what is technically feasible and whether the business case adds up. This helps you decide whether to proceed, adjust your approach or stop in time.
  • Reduce the risk of costly surprises. Test critical assumptions early and consider cost, certification and manufacturability from the outset. This helps limit the risk of expensive changes and delays during development.
  • Move forward with one clear plan and a team working towards the same goal. All insights and decisions are brought together in one Product Decision Pack, with a realistic scope, budget and schedule. One PEZY Product Lead coordinates the disciplines and stays involved throughout development.

A market opportunity, a new technology or an idea that has been on the drawing board for some time often creates a great deal of energy within an organisation. Teams are eager to get started with design, development and testing. Yet the most important questions often remain unanswered at that point. Do customers really want this product? Can the critical function work? What should it cost? How will it be certified, and can a factory manufacture it reliably?

When these answers only emerge during development, changing direction becomes increasingly difficult and expensive. That is why PEZY is launching Define: an approach that helps companies make a clear product decision first, then invest in development with a clear focus.

From product opportunity to product decision

PEZY Define brings customer value, technical feasibility, costs, certification and production together from the outset. This allows assumptions to be tested early, risks to be identified and decisions to be made in the context of the business case.

The aim is not to hold good ideas back, but to help organisations invest in the right ideas with greater confidence. By the end, it is clear which customer problem the product should solve, which functions take priority, whether the critical technology can work and what is needed to develop and manufacture the product. This provides the basis for an informed decision to continue development, adjust direction or stop in time.

Everything comes together in the Product Decision Pack

Separate studies and recommendations do not, on their own, add up to a product decision. That is why Define brings all insights, decisions and recommendations together in a single Product Decision Pack. This is not a report to be filed away afterwards, but a practical foundation for the development team, management and potential investors.

The Product Decision Pack contains:

  • Validated customer insight: evidence of the problem the product solves and what customers really value.
  • A clear product specification: clear priorities based on customer value, technical feasibility and costs.
  • Evidence that the critical function works: where needed, the key technical assumption is tested early with a Proof of Principle.
  • A cost estimate and business case: a realistic picture of materials, components, assembly, tooling, volumes, margins and the investment required.
  • A route to certification and production: clear decisions on regulations, product architecture, manufacturability, assembly and suppliers.
  • A development plan and a clear decision: a substantiated approach to the next phase, with a realistic scope, budget and schedule.

This helps an organisation understand not only what can be made, but above all which product is worth investing in and what it will take to bring that product to market successfully.

One Product Lead keeps everything connected

During Define, a PEZY Product Lead works as part of the client’s team. The Product Lead does not take over product decisions, but makes sure they can be made effectively. Decisions are prepared, dependencies are made clear and all the disciplines involved continue to work from the same starting points.

Depending on the questions surrounding the product, specialists are involved in customer research, design, engineering, plastics, electronics, costing, certification and production. These may be PEZY experts, specialists within the client’s organisation or external partners. The Product Lead ensures that their insights do not remain separate recommendations, but come together in one clear direction for the product.

The Product Lead also remains involved during Develop. This ensures that the principles established in Define continue to guide designers, engineers and other specialists as they develop the product further.

Developing ideas and proving they work

PEZY considers the complete product from the outset. Customer value and design are directly connected to engineering, cost, certification and production. Critical functions can be tested early, while production costs are already being explored before the first factory quotation arrives. Decisions on materials, assembly and manufacturability are also made before changes become time-consuming and expensive.

The Product Lead is supported by PEZY’s designers, engineers and production specialists, the Pilot Factory in Groningen and the team in Singapore. This combination of knowledge and practical experience makes it possible to go beyond a compelling product concept. PEZY helps companies demonstrate that a product can work, can be manufactured reliably and fits the business case.

Understand first, then invest

With Define, PEZY aims to make the first phase of product development clearer and easier to manage. Less reliance on assumptions, fewer surprises during development and greater confidence in the decision to invest.

Because a good product does not start with the first drawing. It starts with knowing which problem you are solving, who you are making the product for and what it will take to bring it to market successfully.
