In practice, things go wrong at familiar points: feasibility is considered too late, disciplines work sequentially rather than collaboratively, and decisions on volume, tooling or certification are postponed until they become costly. Having managed hundreds of projects, we know where R&D projects lose time and budget – and how to prevent this systematically.

That is why we start by looking at the whole picture: technology, the business case and operations. Not to make the process more cumbersome, but to identify early on what needs to be proven. This allows you to steer the project, based on facts, towards a product that is right in terms of function, cost and manufacturability.

First, define the right product

We don’t start with a design solution, but with the decision you need to make. Who is this product for, what problem does it solve, and what is the minimum set of requirements needed to proceed? We bring together user needs, competition, technical constraints and business objectives to arrive at a clear product definition. This prevents engineering hours being spent on something that is technically feasible — but which won’t hold up strategically or commercially.

Identifying technical feasibility and risks at an early stage

For in-depth engineering, we identify the critical risks: materials, manufacturing techniques, tolerances, certification, the supply chain and cost price. We verify assumptions at an early stage through calculations, testing or prototyping. This ensures that outstanding issues remain visible in the planning stage rather than coming as a surprise during the pilot phase.

Design, engineering and production as a single chain

Volume is a design decision, not a detail to be decided later. Whether you need 20 validation units, a pilot run of hundreds of units or a scale-up to thousands: that determines the tooling, choice of process and investment profile. We deliberately design with that path in mind, so that you are not locked into a production approach that is either too heavy or too light.

From prototype to pilot series and upscaling

We build prototypes specifically to address the outstanding issue — not ‘just because we’re supposed to’. This is followed by demonstrators and pilot runs, during which we test both the product and the process. In this way, the design evolves into something that works in practice and can be replicated, whether it involves small batches or larger volumes.

Sustainability and circularity in design choices

Sustainability and circularity are part of the requirements, not just something to be included in the brochure. Early on in the process, we take into account materials, construction, ease of dismantling and environmental impact, alongside functionality and cost. This ensures you remain compliant and credible in the eyes of your customers, legislation and internal ESG targets, without undermining the business case.

Design the right product

Many projects lose momentum because the product definition remains too vague. We base our decisions on evidence, not on consensus alone. At each stage, we set out what you need to know to proceed and how we can demonstrate this as clearly as possible. Scope, stakeholders and risks

We start with a joint intake session: the problem, the user, the market context, success criteria and what has already been decided internally. All relevant disciplines and stakeholders are involved from the outset, so that assumptions and interests do not clash halfway through the process.

Together, we refine the scope and priorities: what’s essential for the first release, and what can be left until later? At the same time, we identify risks: technical, regulatory, supply chain, cost and lead time. This enables your team to know where further analysis is needed first, and where you can consciously accept uncertainty.

Value proposition and business case

We assess whether the proposition holds up for both the user and the business. What does the product promise, why is that credible, and what sets it apart? This prevents the engineering team from developing a specification that is not commercially or operationally robust enough.

We assess three dimensions that are key to the go/no-go decision:

  • Technical feasibility — is it functionally and physically feasible, within the strict constraints?
  • User value — does it solve a real problem, and is the user experience compelling enough?
  • Business case — is there a market, a suitable revenue model and a path to volume or margin?

This results in a roadmap with decision points, milestones and a realistic estimate of the effort and lead time for each phase.

Concept development

Through short iterations, we explore multiple avenues and make trade-offs explicit. We assess concepts on the basis of function, usability, differentiation and technical feasibility, rather than simply on the basis of the most attractive visuals.

We work on the basis of concrete use cases and edge cases, so that it is clear how the product performs in practice. We use visualisation and modelling to make decisions more quickly, within the constraints of technology, cost and production.

Concept validation and demonstration

We validate critical assumptions through targeted prototypes and tests. This allows you to provide early evidence for internal stakeholders, management or partners, and prevents the course from only being changed once the costs of redesign are high. The type of prototype depends on the question at hand: ergonomics, performance, reliability, integration or user experience. Step by step, the risk profile is reduced. The result is a demonstrator that transforms discussions about ‘whether it’s possible’ into decisions about ‘how we proceed’.

Design the product right

Once the direction has been set, the focus shifts to reliability, manufacturability and scalability. We design with industrialisation in mind and keep the supply chain under control right through to production, including the handover phase, which often proves the most costly for R&D.

It’s not just a question of ‘does it work?’, but also: how do you build, test, assemble and deliver it in a repeatable manner? By linking engineering and production at an early stage, you prevent the gap between drawings and reality from widening and ensure your team doesn’t run into problems later on with assembly, yield or cost.

Engineering and product architecture

We bring mechanics, electronics and software together within a single, coherent architecture. We deliberately keep complexity manageable; we involve manufacturing partners and testing at an early stage, so that interfaces and design choices are not merely correct on paper.

We make explicit decisions regarding interfaces, tolerances, cable routing, serviceability and cost. Where relevant, we incorporate standards and certification directly into the design. Compliance and manufacturability are integral to the architecture, rather than being an afterthought on a checklist at the end.

Prototyping and verification

Each prototype iteration mitigates a defined risk: from proof of principle to a functional or near-production demonstrator. This ensures the learning curve remains controlled and establishes a traceable path for reviews and audits.

We test the functions and failure modes that matter: integration, reliability, usability, and, where necessary, environmental conditions or service life. We document the results so that improvements are targeted and so that speed does not come at the expense of the quality required by your release gate.

Final engineering and industrialisation

We finalise the engineering phase with a focus on quality, repeatability and transferability. We then guide you through the scale-up process – covering process, supply chain, tooling, test set-ups and production readiness – until your organisation (or manufacturing partner) is able to take over the process.

Specifically: Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFM/DFA), quality plans, measurement and testing strategies, and ensuring component availability. The aim is a product that is ready for launch and can be produced stably and cost-effectively at the intended volume.
