From idea to a functional prototype in record time

Prototype development

PEZY helps innovators, startups, scale ups and established companies validate product ideas quickly and professionally. A prototype is far more than a model. It is the first tangible proof that your concept works, reduces risk and helps convince investors, customers and stakeholders.

What is a prototype and why should you develop one?

A prototype is the first tangible result of your product idea. It is far more than a good looking model. It is a working or visually representative version that allows you to test, validate and improve before making major investments in tooling and series production.

At PEZY, a prototype is seen as the critical link between an idea and a successful product. It reduces risk, accelerates time to market and provides the confidence needed to move forward to the next stage of development.

Why develop a prototype?

Here are the key reasons why virtually every successful product innovation goes through one or more prototype stages:

Significantly reducing risk

Technical, usability and manufacturability issues are identified at an early stage, before investing tens of thousands of euros in production tooling.

Gathering user feedback

A real prototype allows you to test with potential customers and users. What do they actually think? Is the product intuitive to use? These insights are invaluable and cannot be gained from a PowerPoint presentation alone.

Convincing investors and stakeholders

A professional prototype is one of the most powerful tools for gaining support. It makes your vision tangible, strengthens your story and can significantly increase the likelihood of securing funding and stakeholder buy in.

Iterating at high speed

Multiple versions can be tested and refined within days or weeks, rather than waiting months for a new production batch.

Validating manufacturability and cost targets

You gain early insight into whether the design can be manufactured efficiently and what the actual cost per unit is likely to be.

Preparing for certification and compliance testing

For medical, industrial and consumer products, compliance and certification testing can already be carried out on high fidelity prototypes at an early stage of development.

Types of prototypes: from low fidelity to production ready

Not every prototype is the same. Depending on the development stage and the questions you need to answer, a different type of prototype is required. PEZY works with a clear spectrum: from fast, low cost mock ups to fully functional, testable prototypes that are already very close to the final product.

PEZY always recommends a phased approach: start with low or medium fidelity prototypes to learn quickly, then move on to high fidelity prototypes. This saves time and costs while keeping risks to a minimum.

The advantage: because design, engineering, prototyping and rapid tooling are all brought together under one roof, PEZY can switch between different prototype types at high speed without delays from external suppliers.

Low fidelity prototypes

Simple models that primarily demonstrate the shape, dimensions and basic layout of a product. These are often created using foam, cardboard, 3D printing or even manual fabrication.

Purpose: Rapid validation of the concept, form factor and ergonomics.

Benefit: Very low cost and extremely fast iteration cycles, often within 1 to 3 days.

When to use: In the earliest stage of development, when you want to validate whether the concept is viable and resonates with users or stakeholders.

Medium fidelity prototypes

Closely resemble the final product in terms of appearance and core functionality. These prototypes are often produced using high quality 3D printing, CNC machining or vacuum casting.

Purpose: User research, design validation and stakeholder presentations.

Benefit: An excellent balance between cost, speed and a realistic representation of the final product.

High fidelity / functional prototypes

Fully working models with the right materials, electronics, software and mechanics. These prototypes are suitable for technical testing, certification and user testing under realistic conditions.

Purpose: Technical validation, performance testing and preparation for series production.

PEZY advantage: Thanks to our in house Protolab and Plastics Factory, these high fidelity prototypes can be developed quickly and cost effectively.

Pre production prototypes (also known as pilot or validation prototypes)

Manufactured using the intended production processes, such as injection moulding with rapid tooling.

Purpose
: Final validation of manufacturability, tolerances, assembly processes and cost targets before investing in production tooling.

Our 6 step process: from idea to a functional prototype in record time

PEZY has developed a proven, structured process that turns your product idea into a testable, functional prototype quickly and efficiently. Because design, engineering, prototyping and rapid tooling are all brought together under one roof, waiting times and communication errors are kept to a minimum.

Many customers achieve a working prototype within 2 to 8 weeks, depending on complexity. Here is exactly how the process works.

  • 1
    Intake and concept validation
  • 2
    Design & engineering
  • 3
    Rapid prototyping in the Protolab
  • 4
    Iteration & user testing
  • 5
Scaling in the Plastics Factory (rapid tooling)
  • 6
Validation, testing & transfer to production

Why PEZY: our unique advantages

In a market crowded with prototyping providers, more and more companies deliberately choose PEZY. Why? Because PEZY does not just build prototypes. It offers a fully integrated development ecosystem that seamlessly supports the journey from idea to series production.

Everything under one roof

From industrial design and engineering to rapid prototyping in our Protolab and scaling up in the Plastics Factory. No external parties, no unnecessary delays and no miscommunication. This significantly shortens lead times and improves overall quality.

Rapid iteration without changing suppliers

Need a design change today? A new prototype can be on the table tomorrow. Because design, engineering and production are all handled in house, iterations can be made exceptionally fast, often within 1 to 3 days.

30+ years of experience in product innovation

30+ years of experience in product innovation
Since 1993, PEZY has helped bring hundreds of successful products from concept to market. Our engineers and designers have extensive experience across medtech, consumer electronics, industrial equipment, sustainable solutions and many other sectors. That knowledge and expertise are applied directly to your project from day one.

Seamless transition to series production

A prototype at PEZY is never a standalone exercise. Manufacturability, cost efficiency, assembly and circularity are considered from day one. This ensures a smooth transition to pilot production and full scale manufacturing, from a single unit to 10,000+ products and beyond.
