From concept to a product ready for production

Development of electronic enclosures

Electronics are everywhere these days: in industrial systems, medical equipment and consumer products. But behind every successful electronic product lies more than just a circuit board. The enclosure plays a crucial role in protection, functionality, user experience and production.

Analysis: the foundation for a successful product

The foundations of a future-proof housing scheme

Every product development project begins with a thorough analysis of the application, users and environment. Based on this, we draw up clear functional and technical specifications – the solid foundation for an enclosure that performs well in practice.

Companies that approach PEZY often already have a well-defined product idea and valuable domain knowledge. By combining that knowledge with our expertise in product development, we create an efficient process with minimal detours.

We delve into all crucial aspects at an early stage: usage scenarios and ergonomics, environmental conditions (humidity, dust, temperature), maintenance and serviceability, production volume and cost targets, plus the seamless integration of electronics and mechanics. By analysing these factors systematically, we underpin design choices with facts. This saves time, reduces risks and results in a robust, cost-effective enclosure.

Usage scenarios and ergonomics

Designed with the user in mind, with a focus on comfort, intuitiveness and efficiency.

Environmental conditions

Robustly designed for reliable performance in demanding environments.

Maintenance and serviceability

Accessible and well-designed for efficient maintenance and rapid service.

Production volume and cost targets

Designed for scalable production, with control over unit costs, manufacturability and yield per volume.

Integration of electronics and mechanics

A well-balanced design in which the electronics, mechanics and casing work together seamlessly.

Standards and CE compliance

Standards and CE compliance are integral to the development of electronics enclosures right from the start. We take relevant directives and requirements for electrical safety, EMC, operating conditions, degree of protection and documentation into account at an early stage. In this way, we minimise risks, avoid costly modifications and speed up certification and market launch.

Safety

A safe design protects users, electronic components and the surrounding environment right from the initial design stage.

Reliability

Reliability starts with a housing that can withstand use, stress and environmental factors.

CE-compliance

We take CE compliance into account right from the start in order to minimise risks and speed up the development process.

EMC

Good EMC design prevents interference and ensures the stable operation of electronic systems.

Certification

By taking standards into account at an early stage, the certification process becomes more efficient and predictable.

Market launch

A well-thought-out and compliant design shortens the path from development to a successful market launch.

From concept to market-ready product

Translating specifications into a viable product concept is a crucial step. PEZY develops designs that work technically, can be manufactured efficiently and look sleek.

  • Protection against water and dust (IP ratings)
  • Mechanical robustness and vibration resistance

  • Thermal management

  • EMC behaviour of the housing
  • Assembly and ease of maintenance

  • Integration of PCB assemblies, displays, connectors and cabling

  • Integration of brand identity and product design

Developing the electronics and the housing simultaneously results in an optimal and efficient final design.

Choice of materials and circular plastics

The choice of materials has a major impact on functionality, service life and production costs. That is why PEZY selects materials based on properties such as mechanical strength, temperature resistance, chemical resistance, UV resistance and fire safety.

Sustainability is playing an increasingly important role in this regard. Where possible, we use circular plastics, such as recycled or bio-based materials. This allows us to reduce a product’s carbon footprint without compromising on quality or functionality.

Depending on the application, different materials can be used, and PEZY advises clients on material selection and sustainable design strategies to ensure that products remain future-proof.

  • Engineering plastics
  • Aluminium or other metals
  • Composites
  • Circular or recycled plastics

Prototyping and validation

Before a product enters mass production, the design is extensively tested and validated using functional models and prototypes. This ranges from 3D-printed prototypes to pilot production via injection moulding. At our production facility in Groningen, small batches can be produced for functional and aesthetic validation. Through iterative testing and refinement, we validate design choices at an early stage and minimise risks ahead of mass production.

Testing mechanical functionality

To check that the design is structurally sound and can withstand use, loads, impact and mechanical stresses in practice.

To analyse thermal behaviour

To optimise thermal management at an early stage and keep performance under control.

To evaluate assembly processes

To enable an efficient and scalable assembly process.

To assess the user experience

To verify whether the product is pleasant, intuitive and convincing to use.

To validate water and dust resistance

To check whether the housing provides adequate protection against moisture, dirt and other environmental factors.

Assessing light distribution and lightguide performance

To verify that the light distribution, uniformity and appearance meet the functional and aesthetic requirements.

Verify tolerances and fit

To check that components, joints and interfaces consistently function correctly within production tolerances.

Validating manufacturability and reproducibility

To ensure that the design not only works as a prototype, but can also be mass-produced reliably and efficiently.

Tooling and preparation for mass production

Following the validation phase, we prepare the design technically for efficient and reliable production. PEZY optimises components, draws up production drawings and specifications, and coordinates everything with production partners. The aim: a manufacturable, cost-effective housing that is ready for immediate mass production.

Optimisation for manufacturability

We adapt the design with Design for Manufacturing (DFM) in mind: improved tolerances, assembly options and cost reduction. Components are optimised for injection moulding or other processes, ensuring that production runs smoothly and reliably.

Production strategy and tooling

We decide where the tooling is developed and where production takes place – in-house at PEZY or with trusted partners in the Netherlands and Asia. In-house production offers short lines of communication, rapid iterations and rigorous quality control (ideal for smaller batches); partners enable us to scale up for larger volumes and optimise costs.

Tooling, samples and golden sample

Once the design and strategy have been finalised, we develop the moulds and tooling. Initial ‘first-out-of-tool’ samples are produced, thoroughly assessed and optimised where necessary. This leads to a final ‘golden sample’ – the reference product that forms the basis for the entire series production.

Support during the production phase

PEZY actively supports you in supplier selection, technical coordination with manufacturers, further cost optimisation and sample validation. By perfectly aligning the design, tooling and production process, a robust, reliable production chain is created with minimal risks.

Production and upscaling

Once the master sample has been approved, mass production can begin. At this stage, the focus shifts from development to production, quality assurance and logistics.

PEZY ondersteunt klanten bij het opstarten en opschalen van productie, zowel via in-house faciliteiten als via internationale productiepartners.

Dit omvat onder andere:

  • Launching and scaling up production volumes
  • Quality control and product validation
  • Supply chain and logistics preparation
  • Transport to assembly partners or end customers

By combining local expertise with international production capacity, the right balance between quality, speed and cost can be found for every project.

Het resultaat is een elektronica-behuizing die niet alleen goed is ontworpen, maar ook efficiënt geproduceerd kan worden en klaar is voor een succesvolle marktintroductie.
