A tape dispenser in an iconic design
When tesa approached us, they were looking for a partner who could translate a design concept for a tape dispenser into a high-quality product that reflected the iconic architectural statement of the Hamburg Elbphilharmonie Building into a high-quality product, and have it produced initially in multiple small series, sold in the Elbphilharmonie shops in Hamburg.
Challenge
This design needed to be made mass-manufacturable and translated in the proper materials, decoration and production techniques, whilst maintaining its design-integrity and quality. So how do we choose the right material for the thick walls? How do we create the iconic glossy finish with textured shapes? What kind of weight should be used? And above all: how do we Design for Manufacturing & Assembly without compromising the design’s integrity and iconic quality?

Process
In close collaboration with tesa and the Design Agency Justblue, we took responsibility for design alignment, Design for Manufacturing, detail development, and industrialization.
We began by reviewing the existing dispenser concept, carefully adapting the 3D-CAD into a manufacturable geometry, and exploring material options, structural inserts, weight distribution, and potential production partners. Every element was refined to ensure that the product’s form, feel, and manufacturability worked in harmony.
Through iterative testing and technical validation, we translated the architectural language of the Elbphilharmonie into a design ready for efficient, high-quality production.
Result
The outcome is an iconic, instantly recognizable tape dispenser that embodies the spirit of the Elbphilharmonie, from its wave-like roof to its glossy façade and detailed base inspired by the harbor cranes.
With PEZY’s expertise, tesa successfully realized a limited-edition promotional product that combines architectural storytelling with industrial precision, proving that even everyday tools can be elevated into design icons.
