Using recycled plastic starts with understanding how the material behaves. PEZY helped Philips substantiate material choices for the Senseo Viva Café Eco using trial moulds, test parts and injection-moulding trials.

For the Senseo Viva Café Eco, recycled plastic also had to be processed reliably in production. PEZY investigated the material behaviour and translated the findings into parts and production tooling.

Using recycled material while maintaining quality
Philips wanted to demonstrate that recycled plastic can also be suitable for a high-quality consumer product.
The material behaves differently from virgin plastic. The question was therefore not only which material was available, but also how its quality could be assessed and how it should be used in development and production.

We combined materials expertise with making and testing parts in our Pilot Factory. We also helped translate the findings into production moulds and supported production start-up at the manufacturer.

Learning through trial moulds and injection-moulding trials
We developed trial moulds, validated material samples and conducted extensive tests and injection-moulding trials.
This revealed how the recycled material behaved in the intended parts and production process. The results informed material choices and further development.

Designing around the available recycled material
The knowledge was translated into production moulds and start-up support.
Rather than simply replacing a raw material, the team investigated what was needed to process recycled plastic successfully. This approach formed the basis for its use in the Senseo Viva Café Eco.

The project delivered validated material choices, injection-moulding experience and production start-up support.
This helped PEZY enable Philips to use recycled plastic in a high-quality consumer product. The knowledge gained also provided a basis for other circular development projects.
