With a breast pump, how the product sounds and feels matters. PEZY helped Philips improve the mechanical design of the Avent pump and guided the transition from tested parts to production start.

Improving comfort within strict product specifications
Philips wanted to make the Avent breast pump more pleasant to use.
Less noise and a more pleasant tactile experience were key concerns. The mechanical and material choices had to deliver those improvements while still meeting the product specifications.

Improving the pump and material application
PEZY worked on making the mechanical pump quieter within the Philips design.
We developed a motor suspension in TPE and applied materials that feel pleasant against the skin. After finalising the design we guided the start of production at Philips’ factory in China.

Test critical parts first
We produced test parts to evaluate the chosen solutions.
For the critical plastic components we used Moldflow analyses to examine and optimise the design. This connected the desired user properties with the requirements of the product and the injection-moulding process.

Comfort through targeted mechanical choices
The TPE suspension supports a quieter operation of the motor.
The material choices improve the contact with the user. These are targeted interventions in the mechanics and components that together contribute to the user experience of the breast pump.

The collaboration took the comfort improvements from design to production start.
Test parts and analyses supported the technical choices; guidance in the factory helped the transfer to production. The case therefore describes the connection between user comfort, plastic engineering and industrialisation.
