Roberts Beacon 325: 64% recycled plastic, justified per component

Roberts wanted to use recycled plastic while maintaining product quality. PEZY helped determine possibilities per component and tested materials. For the Beacon 325 this resulted in four internal components using recycled plastic.

Introductie

Recycled plastic, without compromising quality

Roberts wanted to apply recycled material in its speakers. PEZY investigated which materials and components were suitable, using existing quality requirements as the starting point.

64% of the plastic weight

Recycled material in four internal components of the Beacon 325.

Two materials selected

After testing two materials met all critical quality requirements.

Roadmap for follow-up projects

The approach gave Roberts direction for further application across the portfolio.

01 · De uitdaging

Switching to recycled plastic without losing quality

Roberts wanted to use more recycled plastic in its audio products.

For the Beacon 325 this had to be compatible with the required product quality. Not every component had the same requirements. Suppliers also needed to gain confidence in the chosen materials and their processing.

02 · De rol van PEZY

Determine a route and guide the application

PEZY helped Roberts with a roadmap for the material transition and with defining concrete projects.

Using our Drop-In Approach™ we investigated where recycled plastics were applicable and what steps were required. For the Beacon 325 we supported the substantiation of the material choices.

03 · De aanpak en het inzicht

Start where feasibility and risk are favourable

We determined the critical quality requirements per component and compared them with the existing materials.

Projects with low complexity and high feasibility were prioritised. For the Beacon several types of plastics from multiple suppliers were tested. Two materials ultimately met all critical requirements.

04 · De oplossing

Four internal components in recycled plastic

The selected materials were applied in four internal components.

Together these represent 64% of the weight of all plastics used in the Beacon 325. The percentage therefore refers to the plastic weight, not the weight of the entire speaker. Roberts also worked on fully recyclable packaging.

05 · Het resultaat

A concrete application as a basis for further steps

The project delivered a substantiated application of recycled plastic in the Beacon 325.

The material tests and collaboration with suppliers also provided Roberts with knowledge for subsequent projects. This translated a broader ambition into a feasible initial application with a clear measurement basis.
