Samsonite Inova: ribs that connect form and rigidity
A distinctive detail can do more than make a product recognisable. For the Samsonite Inova PEZY worked on side ribs that connect appearance and rigidity, and together with Samsonite were developed for mass production.

A distinct identity within a minimalist design
Samsonite developed the Inova as a high-end luggage range for the Asian market.
The design needed to be businesslike and minimalist, but also include a recognisable and sturdy element. The challenge was to introduce that distinction into the form itself and make it suitable for production.

Linking design to functional rigidity
PEZY developed a distinctive rib structure on the side of the suitcase.
The anti-loss geometry gave the design its own character while also contributing to rigidity. In this way a visual detail also gained a constructive function.

Testing and further development together
In close collaboration with Samsonite the design was tested, optimised and developed for mass production.
The specific rib shape made manufacturability an essential part of the development. The team therefore further developed the form in relation to the desired production method.

A recognisable sidewall with a constructive function
The ribs on the side form the distinctive element within the calm design.
The design thus unites the businesslike character of the luggage range with functional rigidity. The technical development supports application in a product that must be manufactured in large numbers.

The result was a design for the Inova worked out for mass production.
The collaboration with Samsonite also included innovations around wheel comfort, usability and smart functions. This case focuses on the rib structure: a choice where appearance, construction and manufacturability come together.
