Philips Senseo Viva Café Eco: designing with recycled plastic
Applying recycled plastic starts with understanding how the material behaves. PEZY helped Philips substantiate material choices for the Senseo Viva Café Eco with prototype moulds, test parts and injection moulding trials.

For the Senseo Viva Café Eco, recycled plastic also had to be processed reliably in production. PEZY investigated material behaviour and translated the findings into parts and production tooling.

Applying recycled material while maintaining quality
Philips wanted to demonstrate that recycled plastic can also be suitable for a premium consumer product.
The material behaves differently than virgin plastic. The question was therefore not only which material was available, but also how quality could be assessed and how it should be applied in development and production.

Substantiating material choices and translating them to production
PEZY supported Philips in validating and applying recycled plastic.
We combined material expertise with the manufacture and testing of parts in our Pilot Factory. We also assisted in translating findings into production moulds and in the manufacturer’s production ramp-up.

Learning with prototype moulds and injection moulding trials
We developed prototype moulds, validated material samples and carried out extensive tests and injection moulding trials.
This revealed how the recycled material behaved in the intended parts and the production process. The outcomes guided material choices and further development.

Designing from the available recycled material
The solution links material properties to part design and the manufacturing method.
Rather than simply replacing a raw material, we investigated what was needed to process the recycled plastic correctly. That approach formed the basis for the application in the Senseo Viva Café Eco.

A product application and knowledge for future projects
The project delivered validated material choices, injection moulding experience and support during production start-up.
In doing so, PEZY helped Philips apply recycled plastic in a premium consumer product. The accumulated knowledge also provided a foundation for other circular development projects.
